SPECIAL HOLIDAY FOOD COLLECTION
The Northern Rhode Island Episcopal Ministries Food Pantry at St. Martin's is gearing up to prepare for the distribution of food to our needy brothers and sisters for the Thanksgiving holiday. Recently, the number of people being served by the Food Pantry has been increasing, and this trend can be expected to continue. In order to help stock the Food Pantry, we ask that on Sunday, November 13, that you please bring a donation of nonperishable food when you come to the service. According to Nancy Leggat, Food Pantry Coordinator, there is a special need for dry cereal, but any nonperishable food donation will be gratefully accepted. Containers in which to deposit your donations will be available in the narthex on November 13 and November 20. Thank you.

SAINT JOHN'S REOPENING
After being closed for two months for major renovations, the doors to Saint John's opened again on October 9 for a combined Eucharist attended by parishioners from St. John's and St. Martin's, as well as friends of the two parishes. The Right Reverend David Joslin, Assisting Bishop, Episcopal Diocese of Rhode Island, officiated as the primary celebrant, with the Reverend Jeffrey Jencks, Rector, and the Reverend Richard Shippee, Priest-in-Charge, concelebrating. Music during the service was provided by The Combined Choir of St. John's and St. Martin's, under the direction of Mrs. Marilyn Ross, and by St. John's organist, Mr. Jack Cook. Celebratory arrival and departure music was performed by Mr. Rob Hanold on bagpipes. A collation in the St. John's Parish Center followed the service.

There was also an element of sadness within the service as it was Father Jeff's final service before deploying to his overseas assignment with the Rhode Island National Guard.

The renovations to the church were the culmination of a yearlong effort designed to implement much-needed structural upgrades and to reconfigure the interior areas of the church, to include the narthex, nave, chancel and sanctuary, as well as some of the exterior areas. The effort, the first phase of a multi-phase Capital Improvements Plan, was aimed at providing a more functional and aesthetic appearance and environment for the safety and comfort of the congregation; providing an environment that will enhance worship and other services; providing flexibility for the use of the church as a venue for services and ministry events not previously possible; and, in combination with other initiatives, providing for the growth and development of the church.

A total of eight contractors were involved in this effort, some as close as North Smithfield and as far away as Georgia. Scheduling these contractors so that all work was done in sequence and on time and "juggling" the contractors so that they didn't get in each other's way was a monumental task that was expertly handled by two St. John's parishioners, Mr. Mike Robertson, Junior Warden, and Mr. Rick Chere, Property Committee Chair.

The renovations included: installation of a state-of-the-art fire alarm system to bring the church into compliance with new fire code legislation enacted in 2004; the repainting of all interior areas of the church, floor to ceiling; the removal of all pews and the installation of cathedral seating; the refinishing of the floors in the nave and chancel; major electrical upgrades to include new fluorescent lighting for the sanctuary and adjustable lighting for the nave; a new handicap ramp and redesigned stairs and walkway in front of the church; installation of new wrought iron railings for the ramp, stairs and walkway; and a new front lawn.

On behalf of St. John's, I wish to extend thanks to St. Martin's who, in the true spirit of shared ministry, made us feel truly welcome at St. Martin's during the time that St. John's was closed. I also wish to thank Mike and Rick and everyone who gave up their time to help with this project. The results of your efforts are stunning and exceed all expectations. And thank you to everyone for supporting and believing in the vision.

SAINT JOHN'S RE-OPENING
Following two months of major renovations, St. John’s will re-open its doors on Sunday, October 9. In celebration of this event, Father Jeff will celebrate a combined service (Rite II Eucharist and Rededication) for St. John’s and St. Martin’s at 10 a.m. at St. John’s. A collation will follow in the Saint John’s Parish Center. There will be no service at St. Martin’s on October 9. The normal Sunday worship schedule for the two churches will resume on October 16 (9 a.m. at St. Martin’s and 11 a.m. at St. John’s).

THANK YOU
Saint John’s extends its sincerest thanks to Saint Martin’s Church for making us feel so welcome during the two months that Saint John’s was closed for renovations. You made possible so many opportunities for the two communities to come together in worship, fellowship and ministry in the true spirit of shared ministry, through which we demonstrated that the concept of shared ministry, which is at the heart of our yoking agreement, is not just a concept but something that is very much alive. Thank you.

SUNDAY SCHOOL
Attention all children and teens! Sunday School at St. John's begins October 16 at 11:00 a.m. in the Parish Center. Our first project is to make clay animals to be part of a Noah’s Ark display in our newly restored St. John’s Church. Teens who would like to help the Sunday School need to show up before classes start so they can sign up for a task. No teens will be allowed to stay in the Sunday School area without an assigned task. So come early and ready to create! For questions or for more information, pleased contact Lisa Coleman (401-568-5149) or Wendi Bosland (508-695-4835).

HURRICANE KATRINA RELIEF FUND INITIATIVE
On September 25, the Northern Rhode Island Episcopal Ministries (NRIEM) of St. John’s and St. Martin’s launched our Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund Initiative. Its purpose is to provide the parishioners of the two churches with the opportunity to donate funds to help our brothers and sisters in their struggle following the devastating hurricane along the Gulf Coast at the end of August. This initiative will run through October 30, 2005 and all donations will be turned over to Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD). Donations from family members and friends are also welcome, and their donations will be included and also given to ERD. To make a donation, please use the labeled donation envelopes which are available on the table in the rear of the nave, which you can then place in the alms basin during the collection. You may make your donation by cash or with a personal check. If donating by check, please make your check payable to “Episcopal Relief and Development” and write “Hurricane Katrina” on the memo line. You are also encouraged to write your pledge number on the front of the envelope to ensure the proper posting of your donation, which is tax deductible. You may also mail in your donation to: St. John’s Episcopal Church, Attn: Hurricane Katrina Fund, PO Box 7155, Cumberland, RI 02864. If you have any questions or desire more information, please contact Deacon Mary Hitt (401-331-7936) or Paul Bousquet (401-658-4591). NINE-ELEVEN MEMORIAL SERVICE

A Northern Rhode Island Episcopal Ministries Nine-Eleven Memorial Service will be held at Saint Martin's Episcopal Church on Sunday, September 11, 2005, at 7:00 p.m., to commemorate the fourth anniversary of the terrorist attacks of 2001. The Reverend Richard C. Shippee will officiate at the service, which is open to all. The service will offer an opportunity to honor the memory of those who lost their lives on that horrific day, as well as those who survived and whose lives have been forever changed by that tragedy, and to pray for continued healing, peace, and an end to such violence.

Regarding Nine-Eleven, Father Jeff sends the following message:

“I am so delighted that we continue the service for September 11. It is easy for America to forget about that day which has caused our secure world to turn upside down. I am even more convinced that if we forget about that day the terrorist cells will again remind us of their presence. I have seen so much in my training over the past month to remind me of the threat that we continue to live with. Just looking at the news daily reminds me that we are a world that is broken. Even the prayer community in France is not immune to evil as we have seen over the past week. One can be murdered even while in prayer...a repeat of other martyred saints. I await the day that I will be able to greet my Church family in peace!”

DAUGHTERS OF THE KING
A good majority of the women interested in Daughters of the King met with Phyllis Larson, Province I President, and Mariana Bauman after the 9 o'clock service at St. Martins on Sunday, August 14. It was decided to begin our study sessions, necessary for discernment and for preparation to becoming Daughters, on Sunday, August 28, after the 9 o'clock service at St. Martin's. Those who are interested but who could not come on August 14 may get their Study Manuals and National Handbooks, which have been left at St. Martin's and will be needed for the study sessions, on August 21, next Sunday, or get in touch with Michelle Callahan or Mary Hitt to see how otherwise to get them. We'll look forward to the upcoming sessions!

CHURCH RENOVATIONS PREPARATION PROJECT

Before the painting and floor refinishing contractors can begin their work, we must prepare the church for their arrival. This involves, quite literally, removing and storing almost everything from the narthex, nave, chancel and sanctuary areas.

All pews must be removed from the church. Four pews will be kept to preserve the history. All others must go. The pews will be stored temporarily for a short time and a number of different initiatives will be implemented to dispose of them on a permanent basis. If you would like a pew, we are accepting free will donations on a first come first served basis. Anyone desiring a pew will be responsible for providing the transportation to pick it up and remove it from the storage location. If you would like one or more pews, please contact Mike Robertson (401-333-5117 or e-mail phector51@yahoo.com) or Rick Chere (401-232-7475 or e-mail chere35@aol.com). All other furniture, furnishings, wall-mounted items, flags, books, etc. must also be removed and stored, and carpeting must be pulled up and removed.

To make this happen, we need your help. There will be both "heavy" work for those who are physically able to perform it, and plenty of "light" work for everyone else. Simply stated, there will be something for everyone to do - men, women, and youth - as we come together as a community in continued pursuit of the vision to which we have committed ourselves and in which we have invested in so many different ways. To this end, August 8 thru August 13 (Monday thru Saturday) has been designated as Renovations Preparation Week. Junior Warden Mike Robertson and/or Property Committee Chairman Rick Chere will be in charge of this project and will be in the church from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday thru Friday of that week, and from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on that Saturday. A signup sheet has been placed on the table in the rear of the nave for anyone who would like to volunteer to help with this project. We ask that you please set aside some time during that week to come to the church and help. When you sign up, please indicate when you will be able to come. Please contact Mike or Rick with any questions, or to volunteer to help. And THANK YOU!

AUGUST 7 SERVICE
On Sunday, August 7, 2005 Father Jeff will celebrate his last service, with Father Richard, prior to his deployment. This will be a combined service for St. John's and St. Martin's to be held at Saint John’s at 11 a.m. Members of both parishes are cordially invited to a farewell collation (no charge) immediately following the service at Cricket’s Restaurant on Route 116 (George Washington Highway), Smithfield, RI, hosted by St. John’s and St. Martin’s. A hot and cold buffet will be available. If you wish to attend the collation, please contact Ann Marie Alarie at (401) 728-9004 or e-mail awama@yahoo.com no later than July 31, 2005. This is a firm deadline. Reservations are a must so that the restaurant will know how much food to prepare.

SPECIAL MEETING OF THE PARISH

Sunday, July 24, 2005
Saint John's Episcopal Church
Immediately following the 11 a.m. service

(From the Senior Warden) In my remarks last Sunday preceding the presentation of the American flag to Father Jeff, I mentioned that Saint John’s is a truly dynamic parish, ever-growing, ever-evolving along the path to our vision and in our love for and worship of the Lord as we go about doing His work and spreading the Good News of salvation and eternal life with Him in His kingdom. The dynamic nature of this church community has become more intense and certainly more visible in recent months as the result of a number of events and initiatives with which we will be living for some time to come. Consider our yoking in shared ministry with Saint Martin’s and our subsequent role as co-founders of the Northern Rhode Island Episcopal Ministries. Consider that we will be without Father Jeff, again, for an extended period of time, but that we are truly blessed with the presence of Father Richard Shippee who will serve as our Priest-in-Charge and spiritual leader until Father Jeff’s return. And add to that a series of much-needed and major capital improvement projects designed to promote and support church growth and to meet the many and varied needs of current and future members of the church. Individually and cumulatively, all of these things, and others, will have both short-tern and long-term impact on parish life at Saint John’s. To achieve the vision, we will need your understanding and your support. And understanding and support derive from knowledge and awareness. It’s how we’ve always done things at Saint John’s. As your Senior Warden, I consider it vitally important that you continue to be kept informed about these events and initiatives, the challenges we face as a community, and their impact on our community. You have the right to know, and I have the duty and obligation to make sure that you do. To that end, I am convening a Special Meeting of the Parish on Sunday, July 24, 2005, in church, immediately following the 11 a.m. service. The agenda will include the formal presentation of Father Richard as our Priest-in-Charge; to provide Father Richard with his first opportunity to address the community in a non-liturgical environment; an update on Father Jeff’s return to active duty and his deployment to Iraq; the presentation of a proposed amendment to the Saint John’s Bylaws; and a presentation on the Saint John’s Capital Improvements Plan.I cannot overemphasize the importance of your attendance at this meeting. As we journey toward our vision, we may not be able to control the wind, but we most certainly can adjust the sails. Please plan to join us on July 24.

PAWSOX GAME
Paw Sox game on Wednesday, July 20th. Free Paw Sox Caps for the first 4,000 children under 12. Tickets are $5.50 for adults - $3.50 for children under 12 and seniors 62 and older. (I guess this is what they mean by your second childhood). Anyway, tickets will be purchased ahead of time. If you are interested in attending, please contact Ann Marie Alarie (401-728-9004) no later than June 26th (the day of the Picnic).

SAINT JOHN’S WEBSITE
Two years ago this week, the Saint John’s website, designed and maintained by parishioner and Webmaster Barry Doherty, appeared on the Internet. During that time, the website has tallied over 12,500 “hits” by visitors, an average of 17 per day. Some of our parishioners found Saint John’s through our website, and a number of visitors to our church continue to tell us that they “found us” through the website. Barry has done a truly superlative job of maintaining the website, providing quality, professional and timely attention on a consistent basis to this element of our outreach ministry. For this, we say, Thanks, Barry!! Barry has now embarked on a major redesign of the website, integrating new skills and new technology to produce an even better website. The results of his efforts will be appearing very soon. If this is your first visit to our website, welcome, enjoy your visit with us, and send us your comments from the Contacts link. We also invite you to take a moment to sign our Guestbook. If you have visited the website previously, please make it a point to visit again soon. We think you’ll like what you find.

  SAMPLE CHAIR
As previously announced, our Capital Improvements Plan (CIP) calls for replacing the seating in Saint John’s. For several weeks now, photos of the planned “cathedral seating” have been available for viewing in church and this topic was discussed at length at the Parish Capital Improvements Plan Information Meeting convened by Senior Warden Paul Bousquet. We’ve now gone one step further and we are happy to announce that we have received a sample chair from the Pennsylvania-based New Holland Church Furniture Company, one of the companies bidding for the contract, and that chair is on view in the church. Please take a moment to check it out, examine its features, and even “have a seat.” We are also awaiting delivery of another sample chair from the Georgia-based Church Chair Company, the second bidder for this contract. That chair will also be placed in church for your viewing pleasure as soon as it arrives. Your feedback is welcome and encouraged.

  SATURDAY SERVICE
As we begin the process of preparing for and transitioning to Father Jeff’s return to active duty and subsequent deployment overseas in early July, certain adjustments will be required in a number of areas. One of these involves the schedule of worship services at Saint John’s. As announced last Sunday by Father Jeff, the 5 p.m. Saturday service will be discontinued following that service on May 29. Beginning June 5, there will be one service at Saint John’s … at 11 a.m. on Sundays. There will also be a Sunday service available at Saint Martin’s at 9 a.m.

  EPISCOPAL CHARITIES CAMPAIGN UPDATE
Since we began accepting pledges on April 10, you have generously pledged and donated a total of $8,515 in gifts, which represents 130.4% of our goal – that’s right … in just five weeks, we have exceeded our goal of $6,527 by more $1,988! Our participation level stands at 84.6% of our goal, which also exceeds the participation level for the entire campaign last year. Thank you so very much for your generosity and your willingness to reach out to our brothers and sisters in need. If you have not yet made your pledge and wish to do so, please contact Ben Dawson or Paul Bousquet. Thank you for your support and for making this year’s campaign the best ever! Your gifts will touch many lives.

  PROMOTION CEREMONY

On Sunday, April 24, in a Eucharist service and promotion ceremony attended by some 200 members of St. John’s, St. Martin’s, invited quests, a contingent of veterans, and friends of the Northern Rhode Island Episcopal Ministries, Father Jeff was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel by his wife, Eileen, and Major General Reginald Centracchio, Adjutant General and Commander of the Rhode Island National Guard. Also in attendance were Brigadier General John L. Enright, Sr., the Assistant Adjutant General, Deputy Commanding General of the Rhode Island National Guard – Army; Colonel James Keighley, the Deputy Brigade Commander, 43rd Military Police Brigade; and Judge Jeremiah S. Jeremiah, Jr., the Chief Judge of the Rhode Island Family Court. The Cumberland Police Department also provided an honor guard for the occasion. Be sure to read the wonderful article in the April 27 issue of the Neighbors newspaper written by reporter Ron Blaise.

See also some of the photographs of this event.

  INSTALLATION CEREMONY
On Sunday, April 17, in a combined service at Saint Martin’s Episcopal Church (Pawtucket) celebrated by Bishop Geralyn Wolf, Father Jeff was officially and formally installed as the Rector of Saint Martin’s and Saint John’s. The service, attended by over one hundred members of both churches, clergy, and guests, was incredibly moving, inspirational and certainly historic, representing as it did the conclusion and Diocesan validation in accordance with Canon Law of an initiative which began two years ago. A wonderful pot luck supper in Saint Martin’s Townsend Hall followed the service. Thank you for your support of Father Jeff, this event, and the Northern Rhode Island Episcopal Ministries.

  VESTRIES RETREAT
On April 30, the Vestries of Saint John’s and Saint Martin’s, as well as other leaders from the Northern Rhode Island Episcopal Ministries (NRIEM), will spend the day in retreat at Saint Martin’s. During the retreat, we will discuss the shared ministry vision and mission which is at the heart of the yoking agreement upon which the NRIEM was founded; ways to facilitate and promote the growth and evolution of both parishes; and strategize and plan for the continuation of our unilateral and yoked operations during Father Jeff’s upcoming deployment.

  April 2005
  PARISH ADMINISTRATOR

As part of the yoking agreement between Saint John’s and Saint Martin’s, Saint John’s has begun employing the services of Ruth Drolet, the Saint Martin’s Parish Administrator, in support of Saint John’s. More specifically, Ruth is now responsible for maintaining Father Jeff’s calendar of appointments, the Master Church Calendar, and receiving phone calls. Effective immediately, anyone wishing to make an appointment with Father Jeff should contact Ruth (this does not include emergencies). Anyone planning an event or meeting in either the church building or the Parish Center should also call Ruth. Ruth can be reached Tuesday thru Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. by calling (401) 723-0050 or e-mail ruthdrolet@aol.com. She will also check our answering machine during the above time frame and return calls or deliver messages, as applicable. The answering machine announcement on our church phone has been changed to reflect these new procedures. These new centralized procedures will contribute significantly to maintaining control of Father Jeff’s schedule, deconflict appointments and events, and streamline communications. If you have any questions or want more information on this subject, please contact Senior Warden Paul Bousquet at (401) 658-4591 or e-mail pbousquet@cox.net. Additional related information will be published in an upcoming Bulletin.

The drive will continue during the whole month of January, concluding on the first Sunday of February.
